I have been spending a lot of time thinking about what makes a great blogger. I am obviously still trying to figure it out, but I think you can break bloggers down into 3 types:
I am immensely proud of the superb use of alliteration there. Just rockin’ the 8th grade English. Let’s get into more detail, and find out which type I think is best…
Personal bloggers are those who write to update their family and friends about their life. I am guessing that this is the most abundant type of blog. It’s the mother sharing pictures of her kid, the friend updating everyone with pictures of his latest travels and the proud owner talking about their puppy. They really share about their life and what is important to them.
This group blogs with a purpose. They are writing in order to establish credibility, create content or sell their services or products. All those consultants out there, authors, SEO companies, even the corporate blogs fall into this category. The purpose of their blogging is to further their career (translation: make money).
Ahh.. the fill-in-the-blank-o-philes. They blog about what they can’t stop thinking about. The thing they spend all their discretionary income on, the hobby they get in trouble for neglecting their family and friends for or the topic their friends come to them to get advice on. They blog because they have something to say about their hobby (meme?) and get all twitchy and weird if they don’t let it out.
So what is the best type of blogger? When the writer is all 3!. Someone who is writing with a purpose like their rent depends on it, on what they are passionate about and sharing their life with their readers. It’s pretty hard to get that combination, so a solid 2 out of the 3 is a solid foundation for a compelling blog.
What do you think? What type of bloggers have I missed? Which type are you?
